● A series of equipments around the polymerization device, such as compressor, reactor, separator, pipeline, pump and other equipments, are required to be able to be used under ultra-high pressure of more than 100MPa, and even the equipments of separation process and recovery process, some of them are required to be operated at 100-350MPa, so the whole process has a lot of difficulties, no matter in terms of the equipments or in terms of the operation.
● The heat of polymerization of ethylene is much higher than that of other monomers. In the polymerization reaction, the polymerization rate reaches 10%-20% or even 30%-40% in one instant, so how to remove the heat of polymerization in the process has become an important topic in the process, and is also one of the keys to improve the one-way conversion rate and reduce energy consumption.
● The viscosity of the polymerization products in the reaction system is very large, and the polymer is easy to accumulate on the inner wall of the kettle reactor in the kettle method process and the tube reactor in the tube method process.
● There are also difficulties in transporting the polymer in the molten state. Reaction pressure and temperature affect the viscosity of the product, which requires great care in controlling temperature and pressure.
● There is also the problem of removing the low molecular weight polyethylene waxes contained in the recycled ethylene from the high pressure separator. Various production processes have been developed by various companies to solve these problems. According to the type of reactor, they can be divided into two categories: tubular process and kettle process. The main feature of the tube reactor is that the material flows in the tube in the form of a plunger, without the phenomenon of back-mixing; the reaction temperature varies along the length of the reaction tube, so there is a maximum peak in the reaction temperature, and therefore the molecular weight distribution of the polyethylene obtained is wider. In kettle reactor, the materials can be fully mixed, so the reaction temperature is uniform, and it can also be operated in zones in order to have different temperatures in each reaction zone, so as to obtain polyethylene with narrower molecular weight distribution.
