Current Status of Production of Petroleum-based Degradable Plastics

At present, the two largest degradable plastics are PLA and PBS/PBAT Biodegradable Resins, with global production capacity of 300,000 t/a and high market recognition, and are most expected to replace non-degradable plastics on a large scale for disposable plastic products.

As for PHA and PGA, their production cost is too high, their commercialization is low, and their degradation rate is too fast and their storage stability is poor. However, considering that they have their unique properties and their costs are expected to decrease in the future, their development prospects are yet to be examined.

The existing production capacity of PPC, PCL and other biodegradable plastics and the expected increase in production capacity in the future are small, mainly because these biodegradable plastics are still in the initial stage of industrialization and the production technology is not mature, resulting in low market recognition, and they cannot compete with PLA and PBS/PBAT in replacing general-purpose plastics at this stage, but are mostly used in high-end biomedical materials.
